The RYA Powerboat Level 1 course provides an excellent practical introduction to boat handling and safety in powerboats. The minimum age for candidates is 12 years, and those under the age of 16 years will be issued with an endorsed certificate.
It is a one day course where no previous experience is required and is suitable for those persons wishing to try powerboating for the first time, or those who wish to gain some extra knowledge to act as 'a crew member' on a small powerboat.
This is mainly a 'waterborne course' where the majority of the theoretical elements will be covered whilst afloat.
The following topics will be covered:
Launch & recovery
Preparation of boat and crew
Picking up and securing to a mooring buoy
Leaving and coming alongside a pontoon
Loading and balancing the boat and the effect on handling and performance
Awareness of other water users
The effects of wash

Accepting a tow
The practical elements of the course are carried out in a 7.5 metre RIB (rigid hulled inflatable boat) powered by a Volvo Penta D3 160 HP inboard diesel engine and operating from Puerto Calero Marina.
The boat is fully equipped with DSC VHF radio, chartplotter, GPS and echo sounder. A full complement of safety equipment is also carried onboard
